Enriched Air Nitrox

Oxygen-enriched mixes, gas analysis, planning dives on EAN.

Depth: EAN 32 / 36
Format: theory + 2 dives
Prerequisites: Open Water Diver
Agency: PADI

Nitrox is air with the oxygen content raised. Less nitrogen means a longer no-decompression limit at the same depth and less fatigue afterwards — which is why on a trip with three dives a day almost everyone is on EAN.

The price, though, is a depth ceiling: oxygen under pressure turns toxic. You learn to calculate the maximum operating depth for a given mix and to analyse every cylinder yourself before the dive — because what is on your back is your responsibility, not the fill operator’s.
